Most of my ingame fortune comes from enchanting materials. The best thing about them is that there is no auction fee to put them up.
Using the Auction house as free of charge storage was actually how I got into the Auction House (AH) business. I put up the mats at 3 times the cost. I figured noone would buy stuff at that cost and if they would it would not be all that bad after all.
The odd thing that happened then was that people bought my mats anyhow. I got more mats from the AH and put them up expensive and they sold again.
A friend and me had this crazy idea to spend all our gold and dominate the Arcane Dust market, we nearly got broke doing this but when the stocks were emptied there were only our dusts left and peole started buying our expensive dusts.
Rather quickly we were able to expand to other materials and learnt a lot about how the auction house worked.
Dusts
Dusts are excellent, because they are really easy to get and as said above they cost no fee to put up. Tailoring and disenchanting can get you most dusts fast, easy and cheap.
- White Bandit Masks -> Vision Dust
- Runecloth Belt-> Dream Dust
- Wicked Leather Headband (LW) -> Illusion Dust
- Netherweave Belt -> Arcane Dust
A handy macro for disenchanting is here:
/cast Disenchant
/use Runecloth Belt
/use White Bandit Mask
/use Avenging Blades
/use Netherweave Bracers
/use Netherweave Belt
The Dusts that I listed above are essential to level up enchanting. Every enchanter will need a lot of those when leveling up, so keep them up expensive. For all these Dusts I recommend stack sizes of 5,10,20.
20 will most likely be too expensive for the average enchanter and they will buy them in stacks of 5 or 10 as few as possible. Since most players seem to level up their professions in raid free time I’d recommend having those up on AH from friday to tuesday.
Infinite Dust, as it provides the best enchants, sell all the time I strongly suggest having Infinite Dust up all days. However Wednesday/Thursday/Sunday/Monday are the best days to sell those.
Players are lazy, they do not like to buy and retrieve single dusts and if they buy too many they have no idea what to use them for. This is were we make our profit. It seems that palyers rather buy 8 dusts for 42g than 20 for 60g. Most enchants require stacks of 2/4/6/8/10/12 Infinite Dust so you should supply plenty of those.
Essences
Essences are similar to Dusts, but some related tipps here:
- White Bandit Masks -> Lesser Nether Essence
- Runecloth Belt-> Lesser Eternal Essence
- Wicked Leather Headband (LW) -> Greater Eternal Essence
- Netherweave Belt -> Lesser Planar Essence
- Avenging Blades (Halaa) -> Greater Planar Essence
I am putting up lesser essences in stacks of 10 only and greater essences in stacks of 1,5,10
For Greater Cosmic Essences I recommend stack sizes of 1/2/4/6/8/10.
Btw, Greater Eternal Essences turn into Lesser Eternal Essences (yes, I felt this was necessary to say). I am selling lesser Eternal Essences for 9g each while there are often Greater Eternal Essences up for 9g. The recipes below 300 require Leser Eternal Esences and it seems when leveling up enchanting, that people take the recipes too literally.
And here is what it looks like, when you collect your income (50 mails limit):
Don’t sell your stuff too cheap, you can have the materials on ah forever at no cost and eventually they will sell.
Thanks for reading and good luck with your sales!

Some extremely useful addons for mass auctioning are Auctioneer, Auc-Util-BigPicture, Bulkmail2 and Bulkmail2Inbox.
Auctioneer
You can get the latest Auctioneer package here. It is a great tool and has a lot of functions. To keep it as light as possible I am not using all modules. Here is a list of modules I am using:
!Swatter, Auc-Advanced, Auc-Filter-Basic, Auc-ScanData, Auc-Stat-Classic, Auc-Stat-iLevel, Auc-Stat-Simple, Auc-Util-FixAH, Informant, SlideBar, Stubby
Auc-Util-BigPicture
AUBP is a great plug-in for Auctioneer. It calculates your total worth by adding cash, inventory, banks contents and auctions and gives out a total amount. For example if your total worth is 100k gold and you just spend 2k gold on infinite dust and you put up those infinite dusts for 5k on AH then AUBP will tell you that your Total is now 100k-2k+5k=103k
You can get this tool here.
BulkMail2Inbox
If you are going to post thousands of auctions you might like to consider a tool that gets mail out of mailbox convenient. There is currently a limit of 50 items per minute, no addon can get around that. You get a nice big “Take all”-button to your inbox.
You can get BulkMail2Inbox here.
BulkMail2
If you are going to split up auctions to multiple chars then BulkMail2 is a great tool to automate this. You can define targets for all kind of materials. For example I have Slanty for glyphs and inks, Vertano for cloth, Finewares for high level Essences and Shards, Daisan for lower level Essences and Shards, Exorials for BoE Items and Recipes, Katya for Herbs and Minerals (including primal, eternals, jewels), Slant for all kind of Reputation items. Wherever I have been farming, if I return to town I press 1 button and all stuff is being automatically sent to the correct mule.
You can get BulkMail2 here.
Macros
Take all mail, place a 60 second countdown bar (DBM, deadly boss mods)
/run CheckInbox();
/click BMI_TakeAllButton
/dbm timer 00:59 Mail
Since I am usually alt-tabbing while waiting for the next batch of mails I have another macro that plays an mp3 with 57 seconds of silence and then a voice reminding me “You have mail”.
/run CheckInbox();
/script PlaySoundFile("Interface\\AddOns\\Audio\\mail.mp3");
/click BMI_TakeAllButton
/dbm timer 00:59 Mail
As you can see, it plays the file “Interface/Audio/mail.mp3″. You can find the Audio files I am using here. Just unzip it in your interface folder and the macro will play the sound. I use the second sound file for Maelstrom Weapon!
Alternatively use your own files and directories. Or this macro here which is using the ingame Stopwatch to produce a “ding” sound after 60 seconds.
/run CheckInbox();
/click BMI_TakeAllButton
/dbm timer 00:59 Mail
/sw 60
/run Stopwatch_Play()
/sw hide
Recently I started to write up all tips on how to earn Gold in WoW, but it was way too much for a single post. Thus I decided to make a category of posts dedicated to earning gold. You will be able to see all posts for this category by selecting the proper category on the right. More articles like this will follow.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be quite a lucrative business. They are really cheap to craft and can be sold for quite a fortune.
Material costs for Glyphs are very low, 1g for an Ink of the Sea and 40s max for any parchment. There are tons of cheap Glyphs on AH, but it is best to careface underbidders and to make your own price. I sell all my Glyphs for 34.50g bid and 39.50g buyout. If you sell just one Glyph you end up with 2800% profit.
The auction fee for glyphs is about 60c for 48h, thus you can put up the glyph 6500+ times before it actually costs you something. At the moment I have about 3k Glyphs which cost about 18g AH fee. So again, if you just sell one of 3k Glyphs you still make 20g profit and everything else is just pure profit.
Which Glyphs promise most profit?
There aren’t many classes that respec often, or ones that have to change spec a lot throughout a reset. Dual Spec cut down the Glyph market hard, pure DPS classes hardly ever respec … Usually they have a PvP and a PvE Spec. So your only hope here is meagre sales from new players/alts leveling up, or glyphs where people reglyph during raid resets … basically AoE vs single target Glyphs. For example Glyph of Fan of Knives or Glyph of Living Bomb. Other than that auction glyphs people use while leveling up or skip DPS classes. Visit the armory and look up some dps classes from your realm and check which Glyphs they use. In addition have all minor glyphs up.
Hybrids are your best clients, especially druids. There are many good Glyphs for each Tree, so they often require to reglyph a bit for certain encounters. Algalon Tank Glyphs might be different than Freya ones.
You should additionally have plenty of Glyphs for FotM classes. Paladin as FotM Class and also Hybrid buy a lot of glyphs these days.
Just make sure Druid, Paladin, Death Knight, Warrior Glyphs, Priest Glyphs and minor Glyphs of all classes should be on AH all the time. While I suggest to have Hunter, Rogue, Mage, Warlock, Shaman on a different alt.
Best time to sell
In EU reset is on Wednesday, so it is best to have your hybrid glyphs ready for Ulduar each Wednesday and Thursday. Then put up all Glyphs on Friday afternoon and again on Sunday afternoon. Sunday and Monday are excellent days to sell all kind of materials.
Why do players spend so much Gold?
I accidently stumbled across this effect, when i had a second sales mule selling the same materials a bit more expensive, to make the real prices appear lower than they actually are.
Even though cheaper products were present on ah, the expensive mule sold quite a chunk of materials. At some point it just seemed to be a waste to offer mats cheaper and i made them all equally expensive.
I do not really know why people buy the more expensive auctions, but it happens all the time. Having auctions up, even at odd times is definitely an advantage that you should not miss out.
Many players just do not prepare and if your auctions are the only ones at that time they have no choice … others do not seem to care at all and jsut buy the first auction they see.
Side gains with Inks
Once a month, during darkmoon faire, the price of Ink of the Sea rises quite noticeably and drops 1-2 weeks later.
I buy all inks for 25g/stack or lower and if I get too many ink of the Sea I’ll trade them in Dalaran to Snowfall Ink and sell them for 27.5g each …
Since some people will try to avoid high piced glyphs and rather get them crafted you should try to have all kinds of inks on ah and still get your share. The Ink Trader in Dalaran is your best friend! Put up 20 single stacks each of Ink of the sea, Celestial Ink, Lion’s Ink, Ethereal Ink etc and put those up for 5.75g each.
How much Gold is it?
EU-Ravencrest is a high Population Realm with lots of competition and I still make around 3-6k this way. It takes a lot of time to retrieve mails (only 50 mails each minute) and to put up 2500 auctions … but you can do it while idling so it is not that bad.
I am quite sure I could sell more if I payed a bit more atention to competition, but that is not how I like to do stuff and it works fine for me. I am using EU-Magtheridon as test realm and had similar success there.
Addons
Auctioneer, Bulkmail2, Bulkmail2Inbox
Macros
Cancel all Auctions without a bid:
/run local i=1;local n=1;while n ~= nil do local b=0;n,_,_,_,_,_,_,_,b=GetAuctionItemInfo("owner",i);if n~=nil and strfind(n,"^Glyph") then CancelAuction(i) end i=i+1 end
Summary
I suggest to give it a try and you are welcome to leave comments or questions below.

Myrddin
An instance that I particularly like to farm for gold are Ruins of Ahn’Qiraj. At level 80 the level 60 raid mobs do not really pose any threat and make a quick run quite lucrative.
A typical run takes about 45 min and averages about 250 gold profit, even if you just vendor all the drops you find. Here is a little screenshot from this afternoons AQ 20 run.
As you can see there is not so much gold from bosses, but the real goodies are the skillbooks for the Level 60 abilities that drop 1-2 per boss and can be vendored for 10g each. In addition, I just vendor the Blues/Epics since the value of shards is not worth disenchanting.
Further interesting drops are recipes/formulars that sell for huge prices on AH. For example the Blacksmith Patterns from Moam go for around 80g each.
Now about the mobs, here is a small list of tips that might make your gold farming a little easier!
Trash
Trash you should avoid are the Oozes, when they are low on hp they swallow you and regain hp while you lose yours … until you die … except if you have some dot that will outdamage its heal. It is best to avoid them and basically you only need to kill one if you are going for Buru.
You need to clear the anubisath trash before Ossirian. The anubisath guardians may cast meteor which hits for 10k+ damage. However there are some ways to reduce the damage taken. The damage is split by all targets it hits … if you have a pet out you only take half damage. You can resist a lot of the damage, since they are only level 62, but some kind of fire resistance is highly effective, too.
Kurinnaxx
Kurinaxx is the first boss inside. He has 2 abilities that can be quite annoying.
- Mortal Wound, an cleave attack that reduces healing taken by 10% and stacks up to 100%.
- Sandtrap, spawns under a player and if he doesn’t move out reduces his chance to hit by 75% and silences for 20 seconds
The trick to do this solo is to use your cooldowns early, try to be at a high percentage of health when you are at about 70% healing reduction and try to outlive his hits. Once healing reduction hits 100% it resets to 0% and you can heal up.
At 30% he enrages and hits a bit harder.
Also if you continually move backwards then sandtrap will not hit you and is no threat.
General Rajaxx
Before starting the fight, make sure that the reinforcements from Cenarion Circle, Lieutenant General Andorov and his 4 Kaldorei Elite, come to help you. If you defeated Kurinaxx close to General Rajaxx they might not appear and you may need to ride back to the stairs leading down to Kurinaxx.
Lieutenant General Andorov will provide 200 hp/3 sec and an 10% haste aura (amplify magic can increase the healing)
Some people like the fight, some hate it. Since I am a friend of zerging down hordes of mobs I really enjoy this part as 7 waves of thrash come and you are to defeat them.
The 8th Wave is General Rajaxx himself. It is all tank and spank, just that his thundeclap reduces your current by 50%. do not forget to loot the corpses of the officers as they sometimes have some blue items that vendor nicely.
Moam
Moam is pretty easy to solo. If youa re a mana user he will drain 500 mana each few seconds, so you might like to avoid high mana spells and focus on your mana regeneration.
If you kill him too slow he will spawn 3 Elementals that do arcane explosions, but the elementals are only level 62 and will miss a lot with their spells. You can continue dps after you killed them.
Buru the Gorger
I am skipping Buru the Gorger because the fight takes forever, he will always chase you and thus you will not have a lot of time to actually dps the eggs that will blow him up and make him vulnerable. Definitely doable, but it takes a lot of time. If you are going for it, make sure he does not hit you, the eggs have a nice blast radius, because his hit will place a stacking dot on you which can kill you fast.
Ayamiss the Hunter
I am skipping Ayamiss aswell. the first phase is an “air phase” and as melee that sucks. Actually haven’t even tried her as enhancement shaman or paladin.
Ossirian the Unscarred
The Ossirian fight is quite fun. He is very strong and hits for about 3-4k, if he is not weakened. If you look around the area you will notice that there are prisms on the floor. You click them when Ossirian is close he will be weakened for around 30 seconds and also become vulnerable to certain schools of magic.
Basically you pull him on mount to the first prism and then you need to locate the next prism and move him there.
He casts a cyclone spell on you, but it will break on first hit. It is just an issue if you aren’t soloing him, because he will cyclone the tank and go for second on threat, which means the tank will be cycloned for the whole duration.
Summary:
If you are getting used to the instance you can easily solo it in less than 1 hour, making it quite profitable, depending on drops. An easy 500g each week.
