title="A look at the first PTR 4.3 Changes" href="http://www.myrddin.de/first-ptr-4-3-enhancement-shaman-changes/">preview here.

The Mental Quickness changes lay Eye of Purity finally to rest (hah, it did not even drop once for us in 10 man ) other than that there are little single target changes, maybe even a slight buff all together … while our AoE capabilities will become quite powerful.

The only change I really despise is the Wind Shear nerf. Not so much the Cooldown nerd, but that there is no compensation for it … the lockout period stays low and it becomes the worst interrupt of all classes. Blizzard Devs do not realize that no Enhancement Shaman has been using Reverbation Talents this Expansion and it makes you wonder how much out of touch with the class they really are.

Videos

General Look at 4.3

Transmogrification Menu, Void Storage, new Reforging menu, Shaman casting animations, new Lava Lash in action.

<a

For us Enhancement Shamans many posts were about Searing Flame, target swapping, AoE, underperforming vs ranged classes and the like. This raised high expectations. Now that 4.3 hit the PTR we can have a first look at what is new.

4.3 First Look, Shaman Changes

You can find the latest Patch Notes in original here, let me quote it for convenience.

Shaman

Elemental

Elemental Fury now removes the cooldown from your Chain Lightning spell.

Thunderstorm now also reduces the enemies movement speed by 40% for 5 sec.

Wind Shear now has a 25 sec cooldown, up from 6 sec.

Reverberation now reduces the cooldown of Wind Shear by 10/20 sec.

Call of Flame no longer increase the duration of Flame Shock on Fire Nova damage.

Lava Flows now increases critical strike damage bonus of Lava Burst by 8/16%, up from 6/12%.

Enhancement

Flametongue Weapon now increases magical damage done by 5%, instead of increasing spell damage by 747.

Lava Lash now deals 260% weapon damage, up from 200%.

Improved Lava Lash now increases the damage of Lava Lash by 10%/20% for each application of Searing Flames, now also causes your Lava Lash to spread your Flame Shock from the target to up to four enemies within 12 yards.

Mental Quickness has been slightly revamped – Your spell power is now equal to 55% of your attack power, and you no longer benefit from other sources of spell power. Also, your instant beneficial, damaging, and totem spells cost 75% less mana.

Stormstrike no longer increases Nature damage against the target. Now grants you an additional 25% chance to critically strike that enemy with your Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Lightning Shield, and Earth Shock spells for 15 sec.

Unleashed Rage now increases melee attack power by 20% and ranged attack power by 10%.

Restoration

Ancestral Healing got an extra effect – heals you cast increase allies’ maximum health by 10% of the amount healed, up to a maximum of 10% of their health.

Cleansing Waters – The heal effect can only occur once every 6 seconds.

Riptide healing effect has been increased by 50%, from 3725 to 5585.

As you might have guessed already a giant %&$§-storm was launched in the forums – not only due to shaman changes. Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street started a first attempt of damage control erm explanation.

Shaman

We made changes to Wind Shear to restrict the short cooldown version to the DPS shaman (who have the Reverberation talent) and make Restoration less potent at interrupting. We think Restoration is currently too useful in PvP relative to other healers because of a potent, ranged interrupt. We don’t think this nerf will have major PvE ramifications.

We changed Mental Quickness and Flametongue Weapon to hopefully put a nail in the coffin of Enhancement shaman using spellpower weapons. We want Enhancement using melee weapons. Players who have been doing so should notice no change in their DPS. Players who have been using caster weapons or armor will find that gear is no longer useful to them.

Elemental’s AE damage was still not competitive with the rotations of other DPS specs, so we buffed Earthquake and removed the cooldown on Chain Lightning. These two spells should be the bulk of Elemental’s AE DPS, while spreading Flame Shocks should be an Enhancement mechanic (see below).

We also tried to improve Enhancement’s AE. In this case, the DPS was fairly competitive, but applying the AE was a headache with having to tab through multiple targets to spread Flame Shocks. Enhance can now use Lava Lash to spread Flame Shock (and the bonus granted from Improved Lava Lash has been baked into the base Lava Lash ability, so Enhance should not suffer any DPS loss as a consequence).

After checking in on thousands of raid attempts, we were concerned that Resto shaman were not competitive with the other healers, especially on 10 player-content and on fights where the raid needs to stay spread out. It’s okay for healers to have niches where they really shine, but we felt like Resto wasn’t experiencing enough of these. We buffed Riptide outright and gave Ancestral Healing a new mechanic of boosting the target’s max health. These buffs are also intended to help offset some of the loss of Wind Shear for PvP.

As you can see, we changed shaman mechanics quite a bit, some of which will be met with cheers and others will be met with poo flinging. Please try out the changes when the PTR goes live and offer us constructive feedback if you want us to discuss any concerns you might have. That goes for all of these changes of course.

What do these changes mean?

Flame Tongue change

At first, I’ll look at the Flametongue change, 1047 Spellpower(Elemental Weapons) vs 5% magical damage, via RAWR and some quick napkin math using Myrddin’s profile and some 4.2 data.

Rawr claims that 1047 Spellpower from Flame Tongue Weapon is equal to 565,38 dps and 14819 dps of my maximum 26524 dps comes from magical attacks (2656 Flame Tongue, 4830 Lava Lash, 1635 Searing Totem, 982 Earth Shock, 1105 Flame Shock, 1741 Lightning Bolt, 679 Unleash Flame, 1190 Lightning Shield). This includes the 1047 extra spellpower from Flame Tongue and high Mastery values.

If Flame Tongue acts as 5% mastery I’d do 8891 dps, meaning the new Flame tongue would be 445 dps, resulting in a slight loss, but as I understand Flame tongue weapon will increase all magical damage done by 5% (740 dps) which would result in a slight buff, even if you remove a bit damage from the 1000 spell power loss (this calculation was done assuming I’d have 10600 spell power) we’d end up slightly higher. There is also the Mental Quickness change, granting 55% spell power from attack power instead 50% and also 10% more attack power from Unleashed Rage.

This change seems to not have a large effect on enhancement shamans, probably resulting even in a slight buff. On the other hand the 6% spell power from Arcane Brilliance will no longer affect us and the Orc racial Blood Fury will only grant attack power instead of both.

Lava Lash changes

Lava Lash has been slightly adjusted, meaning they moved the +30% (15%/30%) from improved Lava Lash to the base ability, which was buffed from 200% to 260%. The tooltip on Live vs PTR is 300% vs 312% Offhand damage (don’t foget to take off t11 armor, if you want unaltered values), the searing totem mechanic remains untouched. Meaning it is a slight buff to our dps, looking at above numbers it is a 560 dps buff in full t12.

Lava Lash additionally spreads flame shock to 4 targets within 12 yards that aren’t affected by Flame Shock or crowd control, yet. Nevertheless I am a bit puzzled by the change, as they claimed with 4.0 to remove any form of free AoE damage and this seems to be the exact opposite.

No Buff comes without a prize though ….

Wind Shear change

When you look at the Wind Shear change you really have to wonder how out of touch the Devs are with the class. My personal highlight was the claim that all DPS Shamans would use Reverbation … “Wind Shear to restrict the short cooldown version to the DPS shaman (who have the Reverberation talent)“.

But Blizzard Reverbation is NOT IN ANY high end enhancement shamans dps spec, why would we? I suppose any Enhancement Shaman would take Elemental Precision over Reverbation and Fire Nova, especially with Lava Lash spreading Flame Shocks.

While I don’t mind some added responsibility via purging and interrupting it is not a “fun” job. Instead as enhancement shamans we are interrupters first class … shortest cd, no dps loss while doing it (technically at least) and I did not mind that. But now everyone will expect us to go on like that meaning we will have 1 crap spec with Reverbation and a DPS spec with our DPS Talents and that is pissing me off, to get punished, losing 2 valuable talent points into an ability that isn’t “fun” to use the first place.

It also means the death of the Enhancement / Resto PvP spec – see my second spec, the only spec that provided some form of survivability.

On top of all that, increasing its cooldown, you’d have to bring Wind Shear on pair with other interrupt, meaning to massively increase its lockdown period, to simply nerf its cooldown is just not enough.

Conclusion

It seems that we will be seing some buffs to our dps due to having higher attack power, a bit more lava lash damage, flame tongue weapon change. Our AoE abilities will become much better by removing the ramp up time. We will also have a few buffs less to worry about, as we no longer need arcane brilliance to shine on meters.

Ont he other end of the equation stands the Wind Shear change. Personally I don’t mind a change to wind shear, but if you do it, do it correct and not in an half assed attempt by some people who apparently have no understanding about raiding as shaman.

What can we do about it? Complain! Give them feedback in these threads <a

Apart from all the changes that you can read up on here we will look at the Enhancement Shaman specific changes. You may have wondered that the site hasn’t been updated, bt the ugly truth is, there was nothing to announce for our class. Until the Q/A was filled up with complaints about our current status. Interesting enough, 24h hours later Enhancement Shamans got announced and it was it was a buff.

<span

It now causes Lightning Shield to generate an extra charge, rather than consuming one, when it is triggered by receiving damage, up to a maximum of 3 (9 with the Rolling Thunder talent).

There was also an interesting Blue Post about Fire Nova. Blizzard knows that the mechanic blows, but have no solution to improve it right now. In my opinion it should have been included in 4.2, judging by the speed these changes come these days we will probably have to live with Fire Nova for the next 8 months You can read the Dev comments on 4.2 Balancing here in original.

Shaman

We previously nerfed Water Shield via hotfix because shaman were gaining too much mana in PvP when attacked (especially by pets to discourage drinking). The 4.2 change is just a more elegant implementation of the same nerf that should keep the same mana per time as they have currently.

We recognized Fire Nova had some usability issues so we increased its throughput and added the Flame Shock refresh mechanic to help ease some of the inconvenience. This is a new mechanic and one we are still evaluating.

We introduced the Glyph of Unleashed Lightning to help shaman feel less punished by movement in both PvP and PvE. The impact of changes like this is very difficult to model.

We nerfed Mana Tide for the same reason we nerfed Innervate — it was just providing too much mana for the group’s healers as a whole. We didn’t want to decrease the benefit to the shaman, so we redesigned / added the talent of Resurgence to help offset the nerf to them personally.

Personally I find the current fire nova mechanic rather tedious, you end up out of melee range or tab a target behind you and ruin your damage. The proposed change that Fire Nova increases the Duration on Flame Shocks by a few seconds does not make it more appealing to use, especially in every day heroic runs, etc … if your FS target dies you stand there without AoE at all. This is why I personally prefer to just skip the AoE and do what we do best, single target dps (occasional Fire Nova of course). Except for very large pulls I seem to pull higher and reliable dps this way.

Enhancement Shaman Weapons

Source: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/2592852346?page=15#284

With an eye to the future, we’re looking forward to two weapons suitable for Enhancement in Firelands that do not require killing Ragnaros. One of these weapons can drop from multiple bosses, so you can hold out hope that even if the first boss doesn’t drop what you’re looking for, the next one might. There are also no agility swords this time around to take up those one-hander slots.

This change made me kind of happy. I bought Maimgor’s Bite 3 days into the Expansion and am still using it (Borked stopped raiding and the only hc weapon drops from Nefarian)

There will be new Item Level 365 craftable weapons. An Agility Sword and a Strength Axe … good choices, aren’t they

Ask the Devs #10 – Damage Dealing (Answers)

Q: The new “assist” pet stance added in 4.2 would work very well with fire totems – is there any reason why totems were specifically excluded from that functionality? – Korghal (NA/ANZ)
A: We’d love to have Searing Totem use the new assist stance, but we felt it was too risky to just flip that switch without a great deal of testing. True pets have a control bar so it’s possible to override their behavior if the default behavior is something you don’t want. That’s not the case for Searing Totem. We’ve just recently been able to get the totem to behave fairly predictably in a wide variety of situations – it has a lot of special case code designed to make it do what players want it to do. (Making an AI behave consistently isn’t that hard; making an AI read players’ minds is the hard part!) If assist works out well for pets, and some of the temporary guardians like Guardian of Ancient Kings, we’ll turn it on for Searing Totem.
The Fire Elemental is even more complicated than Searing Totem because the totem is the master of the elemental, not the shaman. It generally works pretty well focusing on the Flame Shock target, but we plan on rebuilding the spell so that the totem summons the elemental (and killing the totem could still despawn the elemental), but the shaman is considered the master, which will solve some of the problems that arise.

Q: Have you considered reincorporating Windfury as the shaman’s main DPS ability? Lava lash is their best ability (Cataclysm), but it feels nerfed and feels far too predictable. – Saverhagen (LA)
A: Every Enhancement shaman loves seeing numbers fly across the screen when a huge multi-crit Windfury occurs, reinforced by our recent change to allow Windfury Weapon to trigger three additional attacks, rather than merely two. Windfury is ultimately a passive ability, though, and serves as an extension (albeit an awesome one) of your auto-attacks. In Burning Crusade, Windfury was prominent because shaman had very few active buttons to press, and long periods of downtime between them that some would fill by “twisting” totems. Not the most compelling gameplay. In Wrath of the Lich King, they arguably inherited the opposite problem, having so many buttons to press that there was never a free global cooldown, while no single ability felt particularly impactful or meaningful. For Cataclysm, we attempted to pare down the rotational complexity of the Enhancement shaman (removing the need to manually refresh Lightning Shield, removing Fire Nova from single target rotations, etc.) and at the same time created synergies that allow Lava Lash to do impressive damage. As an aside, there were several questions that we didn’t answer about whether Enhancement DPS is too low overall. It is, and we buffed it for 4.2: (http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/blog/2251127#blog)

Q: Currently, Enhancement benefits greatly from mastery, but poorly from crit and haste; what solutions have you considered (aside from the previously mentioned possibility of 200% crits) to make these stats more attractive to Enhancement shaman, especially since the spec has such a high requirement for hit rating and expertise rating, making it harder to reforge into more mastery? – Wickedpissah (NA/ANZ)
A: As we’ve discussed in the past, any time a class has a meaningful portion of its damage only receiving 50% bonus critical damage, it’s going to be difficult for crit rating to be an attractive stat. We’d certainly prefer if haste were a more attractive stat for Enhancement shaman. For many other melee classes, the great value of haste lies in its ability to increase resource generation. Enhancement shaman are not generally limited by any resource, so aside from more auto-attack damage and Windfury/Flametongue procs, haste currently yields more Maelstrom Weapon charges. We’ve thought about taking steps to make Maelstrom Weapon a more central mechanic for the Enhancement shaman spec, which would in turn make haste potentially much more valuable, but don’t currently have any firm solution to announce.

Q: Is anything ever going to be done to decisively end Enhancement’s usage of spell power weapons? – Ragnarok (NA/ANZ)
A: Part of what makes the Enhancement shaman feel like a true hybrid is their even mix of melee attacks and magical ones, and changing the way spells like Lightning Bolt or Flame Shock work might have a serious impact on how Elemental shaman play. We do want Enhancement shaman using melee-oriented Agility weapons, though, and one solution we’re considering is a mechanism that would make Enhancement shaman spells all scale from attack power, similar to what we did with Flametongue procs. In the meantime, we’ve taken steps (and will continue to take them) to ensure that while spell power weapons might at times, with certain gear setups, remain an interesting alternative, they aren’t the strictly superior route.

Now you should be up to date with all information regarding 4.2 and Enhancement Shamans. Being not 100% sure if my math and tests are correct, but the changes to Stormstrike (~750 dps) and Unleash Wind (~150 dps) resulted in about 900 dps upgrade in heroic T11 gear.<br

This made me head to PTR and check out how bad the situation has become. Unfortunately Doomwalker/Kazzak weren’t up, but I was able to kill Magtheridon. Since he drops the same amount of Gold as Kazzak/Doomwalker on live realms you can conclude that their gold is in the same range.

Announcement

The original announcement, which you can look at here, Blizzard mentions only a few bosses. At the moment it is unclear if other Bosses, for example in Black Temple, Tempest Keep, Serpent Shrine Cavern, Doomwalker, etc are nerfed aswell.

The gold amounts on the following encounters have been substantially reduced: Flame Leviathan, Magtheridon, Gruul the Dragonkiller, Doom Lord Kazzak, and all encounters in Karazhan.

The first thing that struck me, when engaging Magtheridon, was that the Channelers no longer helped each other, they simply stood still channeling and only aggroed targets would fight back.
<p

While he still drops the same amount of items his gold was reduced by 90%. It seems they dropped his gold from ~500g to ~50g, which is a bit harsh, but on the other hand would explain the nerfs mentioned above.

Guessing wildy, I’d say this 90% nerf goes for Kazzak/Doomwalker aswell … not sure if the 250g raid bosses (Gruul, etc … ) are reduced to 50 gold aswell or – which is more likely imo – to 25 gold average.

You better make the rest out of the remaining resets if you are still working on “Got my Mind on my Money” (100k gold looted) Achievement. At the moment I can get about 6500g per reset, which indeed looks like a lot This week Blizzard introduced a new build to the PTR, with Patch 4.1. One of the things Blizzard wants to lok at is to bring AoE damage of classes closer together. Hence the first new changes are basically a bit improved healing for Restoration Shamans and redesigned AoE for Elemental & Enhancement Shamans. Lets have a look at that.

Patch Notes 4.1 Preview

Lets take a look at the official Patch Notes at first:

[...]
To start, we want to do a better job of balancing the AoE power of the different damage-dealing specs. You can expect to see some changes to this end made throughout the testing process.
[...]

Shaman

Fire Nova has been redesigned and decoupled from shaman Fire totems. Instead, it now pulses the Fire Nova effect from each target that is afflicted by the shaman’s own Flame Shock debuff. It now damages all enemies except the target hit by Flame Shock. The ability’s cooldown has been reduced to 4 seconds, down from 10.

Magma Totem now lasts for 60 seconds, up from 21.

Stoneclaw Totem’s area-of-effect threat pulse no longer affects critters.

Talent Specializations

Elemental Combat

Earthquake is no longer a channeled spell. It now has a 2-second cast time, lasts for 10 seconds, and has a 10-second cooldown. Its damage has been reduced by 40% from its channeled version.

Enhancement

Improved Fire Nova has been redesigned and replaced by a talent called Seasoned Winds. When an enemy spell cast is successfully prevented with Wind Shear or Grounding Totem, the shaman gains magical resistance (in an amount equal to what a protection totem/aura would grant, stacking with such buffs) to the spell school(s) of the interrupted spell (except for Holy spells), lasting 10 seconds.

In a Nutshell

After casting a Flame Shocks at a target we can detonate the Flame Shock to all other targets in a 10y (15 y, glyphed) radius. If you use Flame Shock on multiple targets, each one of them will detonate to all other targets in Range.

Glyphed Flame Shock will become quite nice, it should be possible to get up to 4 – 5 Flame Shocks up and then get massive AoE damage this way – since you will be able to get 4-5 Fire Novas off each hitting all other targets. Also it is very nice to no longer having to pay so much attention to Magma Totem.

The Fire Nova damage itself seems to be a bit lower, but I guess that is the price for its 4 second cooldown.

Video

I have put up a Video on YouTube since it is always nice to see this kind of changes in action:

Click here to view the embedded video.

It is probably a bit early to judge too much from all this and the displayed numbers are probably bound to change, since 4.1 is in a very early change. It is a copy of Myrddin (average Itemlevel 362).<br

Blizzard hopes to get us away from using caster weapons in main hand for good. They will reduce the damage from Flame Tongue by 20% and add an additional swing to Windfury, basically increasing its damage by 50%.
While I do not like that they again increase the RNG in our dps by reducing the reliable steady damage from Flame Tongue, it looks like this is a slight buff for us. Let us look at some fights.

Patch notes

Lets have a quick look at the Patch notes:

Shaman

Chain Heal’s effectiveness has been increased by approximately 10%.

Flametongue Weapon procs now deal roughly 20% less damage.

Healing Rain now has a 40-yard range, up from 30, to be consistent with other shaman heals.

Hex now has a PvP duration of 8 seconds.

Purge now dispels a single effect instead of two.

Spiritwalker’s Grace duration has been increased to 15 seconds, up from 10.

Tremor Totem has been redesigned. The totem is now usable under Fear, Charm, or Sleep effects, and pulses much more rapidly, but lasts 6 seconds and has a 1-minute cooldown.

The Windfury Weapon proc can now trigger 3 additional attacks, up from 2.

Elemental Combat

Earthquake damage has been increased by approximately 10%.

Elemental Overload (Mastery) procs of Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning can now generate Rolling Thunder charges.

Lava Burst’s damage has been increased by roughly 10%.

Enhancement

Flametongue Weapon damage now scales from attack power instead of spell power (for Enhancement shaman only).

Purge no longer has its mana cost reduced by Mental Quickness.

Restoration

Cleansing Waters no longer fires its heal effect twice when a shaman removes a Magic and a Curse debuff with a single cast.

Deep Healing (Mastery) has been increased to 3% per point, up from 2.5%.

Earth Shield can no longer be dispelled.

Greater Healing Wave mana cost has been increased by 10%; healing done has been increased by 20%.

Mana Tide Totem has been redesigned. The totem no longer multiplies the Spirit of those affected by it. It instead gives a flat amount of Spirit equal to 400% of the casting shaman’s Spirit, exclusive of short-term Spirit buffs affecting the shaman when the totem is dropped. In addition, its effects are now raid-wide.

Glyphs

Glyph of Hex now reduces the cooldown by 10 seconds, down from 15.

Sample Math

A Blue Post said that the Flametongue Weapon damage change will result in a bout 20% drop of its damage, while the Windfury Weapon Buff will increase from 2 to 3 swings (= +50%).

Argaloth

Lets do some math looking at example fights. The first one being a pure single target fight versus Argaloth in Baradin Hold.

<a

At the same time our Windfury Damage rises from 313125 to 469688, gaining 156563 damage. Adding both together I would still have gained 78649 damage overall.
With Pets I did 3605980 damage, meaning the overall gain would be around 2,2%

FT: 389572 * 0.8 = 311658 =+2.19% damage

Summary

Looking at these numbers we do not need to fear the coming Enhancement changes. They will even turn out to be a slight buff for us. The examples above do not include pet damage, but even with that included we still gain 1.9%-2.2% damage. I still wish the Devs would do something about the absolute horrible Enhancement AoE Situation.<br

Patch 4.0.1 will include many class changes while the world changes – the actual cataclysm will come live with patch 4.0.3 at a later date.

In a nutshell we get to choose more utility, get some glyph and ui enhancements which make the class more fun to play. Many changes are also coming statwise, many buffs get spread to more classes and we will get many changes to our Totems.

Keep in mind that patch 4.0 is tuned at level 85 characters and not 80. Enhancement Shaman felt a bit awkward to play at the start and Unleash Weapon (Level 81) will strongly effect the class.

4.0 First Steps

When 4.0 comes life you should visit your trainer as soon as possible. We will lose some abilities, for example to cleanse poison and disease, while we also learn some new skills. For example Primal Strike (for leveling up, shares cooldown with Stormstrike), Cleanse Spirit (remove curses), Healing Surge (a new heal), Bind Elemental (cc for elementals), Totem of Tranquil Mind (30% less casting time loss on damage), Mail Specialization (+5% primary stats, while wearing mail), Ghost Wolf can be used indoors and last but not least mastery.

Wowhead.

Talent Changes

The next best thing to do is to fix your talents. Beginning at level 10 you will be able to choose a talent tree (is there any other choice than enhancement?). You will receive a set of basic abilities right away and the other talent trees will not unlock before you place at least 31 points in your primary tree. Here are the Talents you get right away.

Enhancement

A totemic warrior who strikes foes with weapons imbued with elemental power.

Lava Lash

Mental Quickness

Dual Wield

Primal Wisdom

Mastery: Enhanced Elements

We have 35 talent points to spend at Level 80 (actually 79) and these are talents every enhancement should take.

Basic Enhancement Shaman build (0/31/0)

you can change that point to wherever you like

also you have 5 more talent points to spend

but each enhancement shaman should have at least these talents

Single Target Enhancement Shaman build (5/31/0)
<p

Using this Glyph your Lightning Shield can only expire or be dispelled, but it never runs out of charges for dealing damage and will remain at 3 orbs for Enhancement Shamans.

This and the new power aura like spell alert for Maelstrom Weapon make the class much more fluent and fun to play.

What happened to my Mana?

Our Mail Armor has no longer Attack Power, Armor Penetration or Intelligence stats. We do now get 2 Attack Power per Agility and a 5% bonus Agility if all our gear is Mail Armor. the following new abilities will help to manage our mana anyhow.

Primal Wisdom
Your melee attacks have a 40% chance to immediately restore 5% of your base mana.

Maelstrom Weapon
When you deal damage with a melee weapon, you have a chance (higher than rank 2) to reduce the cast time and mana cost of your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Hex, or any healing spell by 20%. Stacks up to 5 times. Lasts 30 sec.

Mental Quickness
Increases your spell power by an amount equal to 50% of your attack power, and reduces the mana cost of your instant spells by 75%.

There is also an undocumented change. On Beta Enhancement Shamans have a lot of passive MP5, think it was around 600 mp5 in combat at level 80.

Gems & Reforging

There is a lot of discussion about proper gemming for 4.0 and reforging. Lets look at the stats.

Haste

Shamans lost the melee haste bonus they got during Ulduar

Static Shock no longer procs from auto attacks

Windfury nerfed, *cough* adjusted to 10% melee/ranged haste.

Unleash Wind (Level 81) will bring 20% additional melee haste for 6 swings.

Critical Strike

Stormstrike
Chance to be critically struck by the Shaman’s Nature spells increased by 25%.

Elemental Devastation
When you deal critical damage with a non-periodic spell, increases your chance to get a critical strike with melee attacks by 9% for 10 sec.

Lightning Shield can now critical hit! This will make it easy to keep up Elemental Devastation.

Armor Penetration will be converted to Critical Strike Rating and provide us with even more crit on our gear.

Hit Rating

the new spell hit cap for Enhancement Shaman is 446 hit rating (420 for Draenei)

Expertise

Unleashed Rage
Increases your expertise by 8, and increases all party and raid members’ attack power by 10% while within 100 yards of the Shaman.

139 expertise rating cap, 116 Orcs (using Axes), 116 Dwarves (using Maces)

Agility

Each 83.19 agility = 1 % melee crit (324.88 @ Level 85)

1 point of agility = 2 attack power

1 point of agility = 1,28 spell power (raidbuffed, mail spec, unleashed rage, kings, flame totem)

Mail Armor Specialization, +5% Agility if you are in full mail gear

Mastery

Enhanced Elements
Increases all Fire, Frost, and Nature damage done by 20%. Each point of Mastery increases damage by an additional 2.5%

Gem conversion

Attack Power gems will be turned into Agility, Spell Power gems into Intellect, Armor Penetration to Critical Strike Rating. Hit rating will become a blue gem.

Conclusion

Haste will no longer become our most important stat, since less abilities benefit from it. Haste will be in line with critical strike rating which also seems to be less important than pre 4.0. Our new abilities (especially Stormstrike) provide a good base crit and we are already struggling with the crit cap.
However Agility seems to become a very good stat for us, since all our damage abilities increase by it.
It is not really known how effective Elemental Mastery will turn out. Guessing from the tests I have done on Beta it looks quite promising, basically replacing the spell crit damage bonus, that we can no longer get.

This is how I will reforge, gem

Agility is a primary stat, also our best and you cannot reforge to. This means, it is probably best to reforge gear for expertise cap first, so we can use red sockets for Agility.

Reforge the rest of the gear for Mastery (there are no Mastery gems at level 80), remember the (+hit cap).

Use the 21 Agility Meta, (Relentless Earthsiege Diamond) and one Blue Gem Socket for +Hit Rating.

For good Socket Boni, you can use Agi/Haste (Yellow Socket) or even Agi/Hit (Blue Socket).

Priority System

The loss of 100% spellcrit bonus damage reduced the importance of our spells until we reach high level of mastery rating. I am not sure if Lava Lash or Stormstrike win the priority queue. They both proc Lightning Shield while Stormstrike also places the +25% spell crit debuff on our target.
This debuff will help to get spell crits and thus Elemental Devastation, which again keeps our melee crit up. Fortunately due to the long cooldown on both abilities it doesn’t really make a big difference.
Delaying Lava Lash 1-2 seconds can also help making sure that we will have enough Searing Totem stacks on our target to make it our biggest nuke.

The Stormstrike debuff reads: “granting you an additional 25% chance to critically strike that enemy with your Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Lightning Shield, and Earth Shock spells for 15 sec.”

Lightning Shield will keep itself up so we only have Shocks and Lightning Bolt to assign a priority to. The outcome should be quite obvious

Prio Queue

Feral Spirit

Lava Lash

Storm Strike

MSW 5

Flame Shock x1, Earth Shock x2 Rotation

This will make the class much less tedious to play than it feels at time on live.

Totems

Earth

Strength of Earth Totem

Stone Skin Totem

Wind

Windfury

Water

Healing Stream (will also provide resistance to fire, nature and frost spells glyphed)

Totem of Tranquil Mind

Fire

Searing Totem (single target), Fire Nova can not be used

Magma Totem (multi target)

Spell Alert

The changes to the UI in 4.0 include a Power Aura like Icon that pops up for a few seconds once you got 5 Stacks of Maelstrom Weapon and looks like this. Pew Pew Lazerbeams!!

Other things to note

Totem/Relic Slot

Bizuri’s Totem of Shattered Ice, like all other totems, has been changed to provide primary stat/stamina/haste/crit and should be replaced with Totem of the Avalanche.

Totem of the Avalanche
Binds when picked up
Relic Relic
+51 Agility
+77 Stamina
Red Socket
Classes: Shaman
Requires Level 80
Item Level 264
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 34 (0.74% @ L80).
Equip: Improves haste rating by 34 (1.04% @ L80).

Feral Spirit

Feral Spirit’s cooldown has been reduced to 2 minutes, instead of 3 and its duration has been reduced to 30 seconds. While this hampers our solo abilities quite a bit, it might even improve our raid dps on short fights.

Feral Spirit
12% of base mana 30 yd range
Instant cast 2 min cooldown
Summons two Spirit Wolves under the command of the Shaman, lasting 30 sec.

Sample Video

I have put sample video together, showing some of the talent ui, glyph ui, new spells (up to 85), and power aura in action. If you are curious take a look at it. The video is in 1080p, so you can choose fullscreen and higher quality and read the tooltips.

<a

Thanks for reading.

On a sidenote, something that keeps me baffled on Beta is that one one side we can unleash wind and fire, even get a fire damage debuff on the target, but have no ability that will actually consume it. It would be awesome if Lava Lash would make use of this, which it doesn’t at the moment.<br

At that point we will go through our normal process to determine who is eligible for the end-of-season rewards. This process should take approximately one week. The Lightning Shield Glyph is also very nice, since you ar eno longer required to permanently check your buffbars if it is still active.

Abilities

Ghost Wolf has been changed to heal 10% of your max hp per 5 seconds and still works indoors (glyphed at 150%)!

Maelstrom Weapon is finally working as stated 2 patches before! 5 Stacks of MSW reduce mana costs of spells 0!!! Right now Fire Nova and Magma Totem hit only for about 1500 and 500 damage at level 83. I suppose with more mastery (Elemental Damage Bonus) it might become semi useful again as masses of monsters. Nevertheless our Mana regeneration will prevent to make proper use of this.

This build seems to be a good indicator though that Earthquake will be elemental and Fire Nova an Enhancement ability. Personally I’d prefer that Enhancement gets Earthquake (as fire Nova now) since it fits to the Enhancement physical abilities And in Return channel Fire Nova for Elemental Shamans.

No idea what use Unleash Elements will be for Enhancement Shamans. No other ability has even remote the range.

Screenshot of the Current Magma Totem & Fire Nova Damage
<p
